Even minor scratches, dents, or surface damage caused during handling or shipping can impact the final grade.

In this guide, we'll walk you through the best practices for storing and shipping your cards to grading companies safely.

Why Proper Storage Matters

Before a card reaches a grading company, it can be exposed to a number of risks:

Surface scratches

Edge whitening

Corner damage

Moisture exposure

Bending during transit

Dust and debris contamination

Protecting your cards correctly helps ensure they arrive in the same condition they left your collection.

Step 1: Use a Penny Sleeve

Before placing your card into any rigid holder, always use a high-quality penny sleeve.

A penny sleeve creates a protective barrier between the card and any harder plastic holder, helping to prevent scratches and surface damage.

When inserting the card:

Ensure your hands are clean and dry.

Hold the card by the edges.

Gently slide the card into the sleeve without forcing it.

Step 2: Use a Semi-Rigid Holder or Toploader

Most grading companies recommend semi-rigid card holders, such as Card Savers, as they are easier for graders to remove safely.

If your grading company permits toploaders, ensure:

The card is first placed in a penny sleeve.

The card fits comfortably without excessive movement.

The holder is clean and free from cracks or debris.

Always check your grading company's submission guidelines before sending cards.

Step 3: Prevent Movement During Shipping

One of the biggest mistakes collectors make is allowing cards to move around during transit.

To prevent this:

Place sleeved cards in semi-rigid holders.

Secure holders between pieces of cardboard.

Use painter's tape rather than standard tape when securing holders.

Avoid excessive pressure that could damage the card.

The goal is to keep the card completely stationary throughout its journey.

Step 4: Avoid Sending Cards Loose Inside a Deck Box

While deck boxes are excellent for storing decks and collections, they are not always the safest option for shipping cards for grading.

If a deck box is not completely full, cards can move around during transit, potentially causing:

Edge wear

Corner damage

Surface scratching

For this reason, we recommend shipping grading submissions in penny sleeves and semi-rigid holders rather than loose inside a deck box.

The only exception is when the deck box is completely full, leaving no room for movement.

Step 5: Protect Against Moisture

Weather conditions can vary significantly during shipping.

Consider:

Using resealable sleeves

Placing cards inside a team bag

Adding a moisture barrier where appropriate

These simple precautions can help protect valuable cards from accidental water exposure.

Step 6: Package Securely

Once your cards are protected:

Place them in a padded envelope or small box.

Fill any empty space to prevent movement.

Use tracking and insurance where appropriate.

Clearly label the package according to the grading company's instructions.

For high-value submissions, we strongly recommend using a tracked and insured shipping service.

Final Thoughts

Preparing cards correctly before grading is one of the easiest ways to protect your investment. By using penny sleeves, rigid protection, secure packaging, and preventing movement during transit, you can help ensure your cards arrive in the best possible condition.

A little extra preparation today can make all the difference when that grading result arrives.

Happy collecting and good luck with your next submission!

Whether you're chasing your favourite Pokémon, collecting every card from a new release, or aiming for the ultimate Master Set, there are many ways to enjoy set collecting.

In this guide, we'll explain the different types of set collections and help you decide which collecting style is right for you.

Why Collect a Complete Set?

Set collecting allows you to:

Build a meaningful collection with a clear goal

Appreciate the artwork and design of an entire expansion

Track your progress over time

Preserve a snapshot of Pokémon TCG history

For many collectors, completing a set is just as satisfying as pulling a rare chase card.

What Is a Basic Set?

A Basic Set consists of one copy of every numbered card within a Pokémon expansion.

For example, if a set contains cards numbered 1–165, you would collect:

All common cards

All uncommon cards

All rare cards

All ultra rares included in the official set numbering

However, you would not need reverse holo versions of cards or promotional cards.

Pros of a Basic Set

Most affordable way to complete a set

Easier to finish

Great for newer collectors

Provides a complete representation of the expansion

Best For

Collectors who enjoy completing sets without spending a fortune.

What Is an Expert Set?

An Expert Set includes:

Every card in the standard set

Every reverse holo card available in the set

This means collecting both the regular and reverse holo versions where applicable.

For example:

Pikachu (Regular)

Pikachu (Reverse Holo)

Both would be required to complete an Expert Set.

Pros of an Expert Set

More challenging than a Basic Set

Shows every available variation within the expansion

Creates a more complete collection

Best For

Collectors looking for a challenge without pursuing every promotional release.

What Is a Master Set?

A Master Set is considered the ultimate version of a completed Pokémon set.

While definitions vary slightly between collectors, a Master Set generally includes:

Every numbered card in the set

Every reverse holo card

Every secret rare card

Every alternate artwork card

Every promotional card released alongside that set

Any exclusive variants associated with the expansion

Some collectors even include:

Stamped promotional cards

Prize Pack exclusives

Store-exclusive variants

Because definitions vary, many collectors create their own Master Set checklist before starting.

Pros of a Master Set

The most comprehensive collection possible

Extremely rewarding to complete

Showcases every artwork and variant

Challenges

Most expensive option

Requires significant time and effort

Some cards can be difficult to locate

Best For

Dedicated collectors looking to build the ultimate version of a Pokémon expansion.

Which Collection Type Should You Choose?

Collection Type

Includes Reverse Holos

Includes Promos

Difficulty

Basic Set

No

No

Easy

Expert Set

Yes

No

Medium

Master Set

Yes

Yes

Hard

There is no right or wrong way to collect.

Some collectors enjoy completing multiple Basic Sets, while others focus on building a single Master Set over many months.

The most important thing is choosing a goal that fits your budget, collecting style and enjoyment of the hobby.

Tips for Completing a Set

Buy Singles

Opening booster packs is fun, but purchasing singles is often the most cost-effective way to complete missing cards.

Use a Checklist

Official set lists and collection apps can help you track progress and avoid buying duplicates.

Trade with Other Collectors

Trading is a great way to obtain missing cards while reducing costs.

Protect Your Collection

As your collection grows, proper storage becomes increasingly important.

Using high-quality binders, sleeves and storage solutions helps keep your cards in excellent condition for years to come.

Final Thoughts

Whether you're building a Basic Set, Expert Set or Master Set, collecting Pokémon cards is all about enjoying the journey.

A Basic Set offers an accessible challenge, an Expert Set adds depth with reverse holos, and a Master Set represents the ultimate collecting achievement.

No matter which route you choose, completing a set is one of the most satisfying goals in the Pokémon TCG hobby.

Happy collecting!
